Juba Meeting 2012                                          

The International Dialogue Steering Group met in Juba on 17-18 December in Juba, Republic of South Sudan. Members discussed progress with the implementation of the New Deal at country level and agreed on a number of important issues. These include stepping up country level support and a mechanism to monitor and report on the new Deal. They also agreed that the next global meeting of the International Dialogue will be held back to back with the World Bank and IMF Spring meetings in Washington, April 2013. A series of South Sudan specific meetings took place on the side of the Steering group. These provided an opportunity to explore the opportunities and challenges with new Deal implementation in South Sudan and outline the way forward. The International Dialogue is grateful for the exceptional leadership and support by the entire Government of South Sudan.

Progress Report on PSG Indicators and Fragility assessments

This report summarises progress and key outputs and outcomes from the working group. It outlines the process for developing indicators, highlights key issues and lessons and explains the rationale for developing indicators for the PSGs and how such indicators could be used. The report also contains a set of shared/common indicators that has emerged on the basis of consultations in the g7+ pilot countries, a g7+ experience-sharing meeting and extensive consultations with members of the International Dialogue working group.

HLM Side event: Delivering Better Results in Fragile States

40 senior representatives of OECD DAC members and civil society met informally in London to discuss what they can do to step up their role in implementing the New Deal. They also discussed what they could do to ensure the post-2015 global development goals address conflict and fragility as a key concern. The meeting was held in the margins of the DAC High Level Meeting (HLM).

Peace and Security in the post-2015 development framework?

The UN System Task Team on the post-2015 development agenda has recognised the need to include goals related to peace, security, human rights and justice in the post-2015 framework. The presence of Minister Emilia Pires from Timor Leste, Co-chair of the International Dialogue and Chair of the g7+, in the High-level Panel to advise on the post-2015 announced by Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is a good sign in the right direction.

The Steering Group of the International Dialogue on Peacebuilding and Statebuilding met in Nairobi on the 8th of June

The meeting, hosted by the new World Bank Center for Fragility, Conflict and Development and Co-chaired by Minister Emilia Pires from Timor Leste and MInister Christian Friis Bach from Denmark brought together ministers and senior officials from fragile countries and development partners. A key outcomes of the meeting were the agreement on a political strategy to promote the Peacebuilding and Statebuilding Goals (PSGs), a key pillar of the New Deal for Engagement in Fragile States within International fora and in the post-2015 development frame work. The participants also agreed on hot to make progress to develop indicators for the PSGs, and to enhance support to country level implementation. The next high-level appointment for the International Dialogue members will be a side event on the PSGs at the UN General Assembly in September 2012. High Profile event during World Bank and IMF Spring Meetings

The International Dialogue Co-chairs will host a high-profile event on the 21st of April during the World Bank and IMF Spring meetings. The purpose of the event is to discuss the progress in implementing the New Deal for Engagement in Fragile States and to showcase concrete actions and plans to implement it. This event will also provide an opportunity to encourage enhanced commitment by national and international partners to implement the New Deal. The event will be a roundtable moderated by a leading personality. It will feature the participation of Ministers and senior officials from g7+ countries, development partners, and representatives of international organisations, civil society, the media, and the private sector.

H.E. Minister Emilia Pires, Co-Chair of the International Dialogue and Chair of the g7+ group of fragile countries has presented the New Deal to Permanent Representatives of the g7+ countries and other partners in New York at an event hosted by the Peacebuilding Support Office.

Welcome to H.E. Friis Bach the new co-chair

The International Dialogue Secretariat and the co-chairs are pleased to announce that H.E. Christian Friis Bach, Danish Minister for Development, will take over as co-chair of the International Dialogue from Mr. Koen Davidse, (Netherlands) as of March 1st. We would like to sincerely thank Koen Davidse for his excellent work and his support to the International Dialogue over his term as co-chair. We look forward to working with him and his team.

Meeting of the Extended Steering Group

The International Dialogue Steering Group met at OECD Headquarters in Paris on 19 January to discuss the implementation of the New Deal for Engagement in Fragile States  The Group also outlined priorities for the future work of the Dialogue, which in delivering the New Deal at Busan fulfilled one of its key objectives. A summary of the Group’s discussions will be available shortly.
